After the Man in Black killed their mother, Jacob killed his brother in a rage, not in self-defense, as the Man in Black did not attack him at that moment. After Jacob killed him, the protector bound the Man in Black to the island by throwing his body into the island's light source; then, after her death, Jacob became the island's protector. Over centuries, Jacob maintained the balance by recruiting 'candidates'—individuals with specific destinies—to eventually take his place and continue the protection.
