As children, he and his brother were raised by an unnamed guardian until he attempted to murder Jacob in a fit of rage. The guardian intervened, casting him into a cavern beneath the earth where he was impaled by a rock connected to the Island's source. This event transformed him into the Smoke Monster, granting him immortality and the ability to inhabit dead bodies. Despite his power, he remained trapped on the Island, unable to leave until Jacob died. He spent centuries manipulating events from the shadows, planting seeds of doubt among candidates and orchestrating tragedies to weaken the protector's hold over the land.
