Lore & Background

For centuries, Jacob selected candidates to serve as protectors of this sacred site, ensuring the boundary between good and evil remained intact. The Man in Black sought to destroy or leave the Island by extinguishing this light, believing it was a prison rather than a sanctuary. This conflict drove much of the series' mythology, culminating in the Dharma Initiative's attempt to contain the same electromagnetic energy from the Heart of the Island through the Swan Station project. The energy radiating from the Heart influences time and space around it, creating pockets where events can repeat or shift unpredictably. It also possesses restorative properties, capable of healing fatal injuries when a candidate is chosen by the Island itself. However, tampering with the core without proper understanding leads to instability, as seen during the catastrophic event known simply as The Incident. Ultimately, the Heart represents the spiritual soul of the landmass. Its survival depends on human stewardship rather than mechanical containment. The Mother was the original protector before Jacob, who became protector after the Mother was killed by the Man in Black. When Jacob was killed, the mantle passed to Hurley Reyes, who ensured the light remained lit and later recruited Walt to help him with the Island.
