Michael Dawson

A father who did whatever it took to save his son, only to be destroyed by the guilt of what he had to do.

Michael Dawson is a fictional character played by Harold Perrineau on the ABC television series Lost. He survives Oceanic Flight 815's crash on a South Pacific island after losing a custody battle with Susan Lloyd, which kept him separated from his son Walt for almost ten years. When they reunite following Susan's death, their journey home is interrupted when the plane crashes and Walt is kidnapped by the Others. Michael spends his time trying to retrieve him, eventually succeeding but at the cost of murdering Ana Lucia and Libby. The resulting guilt causes an estrangement with Walt and a suicide attempt in New York City. Infiltrating a freighter as 'Kevin Johnson' under orders from Ben, he sabotages the ship before dying when a bomb explodes. He later reappears as a ghost to apologize to Hurley.

Lore & Background

Before the crash, Susan Lloyd left Michael after Walt was born. Years later, she died, and her husband asked Michael to take custody of Walt in Australia, though Michael initially asked his own mother to care for him instead. On the island, Michael built a raft with Jin to escape, but it was burned down by Walt. To secure their release, he killed Ana Lucia, who was guarding Ben, and shot Libby when she walked in on them. After returning to New York City and handing Walt over to his grandmother, Michael attempted suicide before Tom (an Other) recruited him as 'Kevin Johnson' to infiltrate the freighter.

In Their Own Story

Michael began constructing a raft with Jin after learning Sun speaks English, offering Sawyer the final spot. When their first raft burned down due to Walt's actions, they built a second one and set sail in the season finale "Exodus." They encountered a fishing boat belonging to the Others, who kidnapped Walt and destroyed the raft. Stranded at sea with Sawyer and Jin, Michael later returned to the beach camp and took a shift in the hatch where he received messages from someone claiming to be Walt. When two of the Others kidnapped him, they demanded he bring specific survivors to them. Given a boat and coordinates, Michael and Walt sailed away but returned to New York City. There, after handing Walt to his grandmother, Michael tried to take his own life before Tom arrived with a new mission: infiltrate a freighter as "Kevin Johnson" to sabotage it.

Reader's Guide

Michael Dawson enters the story as an architect dealing with family estrangement and loss of custody. His primary drive is retrieving his son, Walt. He demonstrates skills in construction, notably building two rafts with Jin's help, and navigation. Key turning points include the burning of his first raft by Walt, his capture by the Others, and his subsequent deal to trade four survivors for Walt's release, which required him to kill Ana Lucia and Libby. His arc continues on the freighter under the alias "Kevin Johnson," where he attempts to disarm a bomb but dies in the explosion after Christian Shephard appears to tell him "he can go now." In the sixth season, he returns as a ghost visible only to Hurley.
