He and his brother Liam formed Drive Shaft, which became extremely popular with the song "You All Everybody" before becoming a one-hit wonder. Liam developed a drug habit and gave Charlie a family heirloom ring inscribed with "D.S." (referencing great-grandfather Dexter Stratton) on Christmas Day while touring Finland. As fame faded, Charlie sank deeper into heroin addiction. After Liam left to join his wife Karen and daughter Megan, Drive Shaft disbanded. Charlie resorted to theft, charmed a wealthy woman named Lucy only to be rejected when she discovered his plan to rob her, then traveled to Australia to persuade a sober Liam to rejoin the band for a comeback tour. When Liam refused and offered rehab instead, Charlie left angrily. The night before his flight to Los Angeles, he used heroin with a woman named Lily before fighting over their last stash. On the plane, he struggled without drugs, disposed of some in the bathroom after taking some, when the crash occurred. On the island, Charlie retrieved his heroin stash from the cockpit on day two but later traded it to John Locke for his guitar and burned the remaining supply. He saved Jack Shephard from a cave-in, was kidnapped by Ethan Rom with Claire, and killed Ethan with a gun after being found hanging from a tree. He helped deliver Aaron, rescued him from Danielle Rousseau alongside Sayid Jarrah, and reclaimed him after stopping at a Beechcraft filled with Virgin Mary statues containing heroin. In season two, Mr. Eko revealed the statue contents to Claire, causing a rift until Charlie gave her vaccine for herself and Aaron. After kidnapping Aaron to baptize him based on surreal dreams, Locke beat him; in retaliation, Charlie aided Sawyer in conning Jack and Locke out of guns and heroin by assaulting Sun-Hwa Kwon. Charlie threw remaining Virgin Mary statues into the ocean and helped Eko find dynamite from the Black Rock ship before the Hatch imploded. He confronted two women and Mikhail Bakunin; after Mikhail was shot with a spear gun and later resurrected to flood the room with a grenade, Charlie locked himself inside to save Desmond, writing "NOT PENNY'S BOAT" on his hand before drowning. In the flash-sideways timeline where flight 815 does not crash, Charlie is arrested for drug possession after heroin lodges in his throat. He claims a vision of a beautiful woman (implied Claire) told him he was meant to die. Released from jail, he meets Desmond, who tries to bring Drive Shaft to play at a charity concert with Charles Widmore's son Daniel Faraday. Charlie crashes Desmond's car into the water, triggering memories of his death in the original timeline.
